CBP remains among nation’s leading employers for veterans

Agency recognized for continued investment in veteran hiring and support

WASHINGTON — As Veterans Day approaches, U.S. Customs and Border Protection recognizes the more than 18,000 people who continue serving the nation as part of approximately one-quarter of the agency’s workforce. We would also like to market the release to the surrounding military bases once approved.

Veterans serve throughout the agency as U.S. Border Patrol agents, CBP officers, Air and Marine agents, criminal investigators, mission-support professionals and agency leaders. In fiscal year 2026, CBP hired 1,539 veterans, representing 18.5 percent of all new hires, and will participate in multiple Veteran career fairs throughout the country.

“CBP is proud to recognize the veterans across our workforce whose service to our nation did not end when they left the military,” said CBP Commissioner Rodney S. Scott. “Their professionalism, teamwork, and sense of duty strengthen our mission every day. This Veterans Day, we thank all veterans for their service and their continued contributions to our country.”

Each year, CBP is recognized as a leading employer for veterans. This year, U.S. Veterans Magazine recognized CBP for its commitment to recruiting, hiring and supporting veterans and transitioning service members. The Department of War also recognized CBP for fostering supportive work environments for Reserve and National Guard service members.

CBP’s commitment extends beyond recruitment. Through the CBP Veteran Support Program, employees and their families receive assistance navigating employment benefits, connecting with Department of Veterans Affairs resources, and accessing mental, physical and emotional health support. A worldwide network of approximately 300 coordinators helped 1,151 employees obtain an estimated $18 million in direct compensation during fiscal year 2024.

CBP also supports transitioning service members through the Department of War SkillBridge Internship Program, which provides practical, pre-separation work experience in non-law-enforcement career fields. The agency offers 167 internship opportunities across 25 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. In fiscal year 2026, CBP hosted 54 SkillBridge interns, 13 of whom were subsequently hired into permanent CBP positions.
