Message from the Director – August 2026
As we move through the heart of summer, I want to take a moment to reflect on the many ways Nevada continues to come together in support of our veterans, service members, and their families. Across our state, we’ve celebrated, remembered, and strengthened the commitments and partnerships that make our veteran’s community so special.
The month of August will bring more opportunities for us to gather to celebrate, support, or honor those we have served. On August 7, communities across Nevada will recognize Purple Heart Day, paying tribute to the courage and sacrifice of our Purple Hear recipients. We also look forward to hosting and supporting the Third Annual Veterans Suicide Prevention Color Run/Walk on August 15 at the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sparks, followed by the Northern Nevada State Veterans Home Art Garden Fundraiser at the Reno Elks Club. There are more details as well as registration information in this newsletter or on our website and I encourage you to do so!
Speaking of our website, I’m excited to announce the soft launch of our newly redesigned website. The updated site makes it easier to find information about benefits, programs, and services, helping us better connect veterans and their families with the resources they deserve. We invite you to explore the new site and let us know what you think.
I’m also pleased to welcome our new Deputy Director of Healthcare Services, Jennifer Belza-Vinuya! She is a U.S. Army veteran and Registered Nurse with more than three decades of experience in skilled nursing, assisted living, rehabilitation, and hospital settings. We are fortunate to have her, and we are certain she will further strengthen the passionate and devoted teams serving both our State Veterans Homes and our health and wellness programs.
We also welcome Mark Prizina as Interim Deputy Director of Benefits. Mark previously served as my Executive Assistant and brings a strong understanding of our Department and its mission. He will lead our Benefits Division while we conduct a thoughtful search for a permanent deputy director to oversee our State Veterans Memorial Cemeteries, our Outreach Team and other essential services.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who joined us for Day of Gratitude at Allegiant Stadium in June. More than 11,000 veterans, active-duty service members, military families, and community supporters came together to honor those who have served our nation. Your participation and support made the event a tremendous success!
